#1: Funny new purchase, not stable, oil change got 6+ quarts (SOLVED) Author: yellow1342 Post Posted: Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:16 pm

First bike in US, 86 XV 700 CSC. very very clean garaged but was none op for 3-4 years. started 1 out of 3-4 time try, not smooth when gets down to 2krpm, has to put more gas.

Air filter was not that clean, I removed (on order) it does not improve much. new battery - not much. I changed oil -WOW spec said should 3.3 qts but it poured out about 6+ qts of very thin oil with mix of gasline smell. wonder where did it came from? drained from carb? if oil pan holds 3.3 then 6 qts will pretty much filled up to the piston? sounds serious problem?

thanks

Sound like your petcocks are leaking and the gas is running out of tank into crankcase. Flush out and give it a proper oil fill and check for gas flow with engine off. The petcocks are vacuum operated and should not flow without engine running.

Yes DO NOT run it if there are any signs of gas in the Oil . Trust me it can get expensive really fast , by causing damage to the engine

Thanks Arnie;
It's indeed having petcock seal problem, I found my gasline in the tank was going very fast but did not suspect goes into crankcase!? (thru carb?) I ordered a kits for the valve seal, hope will ship out soon!

I know it's not proper to discuss vendor but as first time other than google, don't know good source: I ordered petcock from cheapcycleparts and another vendor is Ronnie's mailorder warehouse, are they reliable and reasonable vendor for parts? if vialate the forum policy, please ignore!

thanks
Philip

the carb is connected to the manifold but the petcock is too...the gas bypasses the carb...through an open valve...slides past the rings...and winds up in the crankcase...sometimes [sitting up] it'll flood the carb...past the rings and into the crankcase if the intake's open
