Seems like you ran out of gas. When you flipped to reserve the carb
bowl was still dry, as you were cranking you got enough vacuum to
open the petcock long enough to allow gas to flow into the carb bowl
and get it started. Once it was running the continued vacuum created
by the running motor kept the petcock open and gas flowing.
Next time try switching to PRIME when that happens. That
setting is not dependant on the engine vacuum, and is always 'on'.
Once you are started again, flip over to reserve and head for a gas
station.
(This is the first time you've run into the res on
this bike right?)
