I was coasting to a stop light in second and it just shut off. It wouldn't restart, and I had to pull under the freeway and try and figure out what the hell was going on. I flipped the fuel switch to reserve(I just hit 100 miles on odometer) and still nothing. I put on full choke and cranked it 5 times, and FINALLY it started up and ran perfect the rest of the 5 miles home.

What happened? confused

Seems like you ran out of gas. When you flipped to reserve the carb bowl was still dry, as you were cranking you got enough vacuum to open the petcock long enough to allow gas to flow into the carb bowl and get it started. Once it was running the continued vacuum created by the running motor kept the petcock open and gas flowing.

Next time try switching to PRIME when that happens. That setting is not dependant on the engine vacuum, and is always 'on'. Once you are started again, flip over to reserve and head for a gas station.

(This is the first time you've run into the res on this bike right?)

Wow, I must be an idiot. Haha. Thanks.

I guess I'm just not used to such a small tank. I thought the reserve was pretty small, and there was no way I could have reached it yet.

Don't be too hard on yourself...had a similar experience myself recently. I've been riding a long time, but sorta new to Viragos, didn't have my glasses when I filled it and set it to reserve instead of run, Rolling Eyes ended up pushing it (uphill) to the gas station later..there is no reserve if you're already on reserve, it will pretty much suck the tank dry.

Check your gas mileage, you should get 200 miles on a tankful. My xv250 averages between 80 and 90 mpg. If you only get a hundred mile per tank, something is wrong.

I went to fill with gas last week and had forgot my billfold. Went home and went to bed. Got up and got ready to go for a ride. Got 22 miles and bike died? Checked tank and it was empty. Could not figure where the gas went. I had already reset odometer when I did not have money for gas! After a while I realized I had had a "senior" moment and forgot I had not go gas. I have been taking a lot of ribbing from the guys that I was with.

One of the most important things to carry in your emergency tool kit is an Okie/Texan "gas pump" which consists of only about 5 feet of reasonably adequate siphon hose. Refueling stops abound when nobody's lookin' tongue

No, it's right. I did the calculations and I was getting roughly 60mpg. That seems right because I rode it pretty hard.

jmccalip:

I got 66 mpg for the first 129 miles.

Now I get 86 mpg in the summer.

Go easy on it during the break in.
