--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1984 xv1000 Starter Spins but bendix wont engage flywheel.

So i've tried also everything I can imagine or what other advice pepole are giving on the internet.....so trying here to see it i can get more help.

This is what i've done/replaced

New starter (long shaft)
New bendix spring
New solenoid shaft to kick out bendix gear
New collar on bendix shaft
new collars on solenoid spring
New bendex shaft

The starter clutch is working fine and all remaining gears are sound and not excessivle worn.

The first problem started this year on the first start....the solenoid shaft the pulls out the bendix gear stuck. With normal hand pressure I was able to push it back. When the starter was engaged the bendix gears would mesh but not engage in the fly wheel. I have bypassed all the electrical as well to provide 12V directly at the starter and solenoid.

after replacing all of these parts, and when apart, all work perfectly, but when it goes together......same problem.

Help Please!

Paul

Man. Sounds like its in a real bind somehow, doesnt it? I cant think of what would do that. Maybe the starter button sticking open?

Thought of that so I check circitry with ohm meter and swith works fine. I been reading alot of the older post and I think the issue may be the starter clutch. Even thought it turns fine (one direction) its not 100% smooth. One form post indicated that it should turn with out any noise or clicking. If this is so the mine does not. I assumed that if it turn in the one direction and lock in the reverse it was fine.

I'm at a point to try anything. I havent been on her at all this year and it killing me!

Gonna order one fron Yamaha on Monday!

Thoughts?

Cheers

The starter gears have to be engaging if the starter spins. The solenoid has to pull in all the way to excite the starter. When it pulls in, it pulls the idler gear out into the fly wheel/rotor. When the motor starts the rotor forces the idler gear back in. Since it won't turn the motor over the idler gear stays engaged with the rotor. This is normal. It will do the same thing if you remove the plugs and turn it over, everything working correctly.
I would bet your problem is the clutch.

Solved with the started clutch.....be prepared to open the walet tho.....quite expensive for such a small part.

Thanks for the help guys!

I'll post a pic of her later.
