My tires are on order - hope to fit between Xmas & New Years, but received word one of them is on backorder ...

#2:   Author: Cafe-XV750 Post Posted: Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:00 pm

Finally got my tires ... hope to mount-up and trial fit soon.

Here are some pics one of the kit buyers sent me of the conversion on his XJ(750) Maxim project. As you can see the XJ rear wheel drum brake is larger than the XV's, but the he reported no major fitment issues and was happy with the way it turned out. A 130/90-16 tire is shown in his pics.

Holy crow!!

That bad boy looks like a steam-roller up front!

Profile shot, please, showing front and back tires.

#5:   Author: Cafe-XV750 Post Posted: Sat Jan 09, 2010 10:06 am

Didn't mention if he lowered the forks - doesn't look like it to me. Found it interesting that he decided to change from the XJ dual front disc to a single disc.

Those are only pics he sent me ... perhaps he'll post-up more here later.

This is interesting - decisions, decisions ...

TIRE COMPARISON PIC

The King tire is currently what is mounted on the rear of my bike and is practically new. The others are brand new - was planning on mounting up both Duros (130 rear and 120 front), but I found the Bridgestone on the 'CLEARANCE' table at my local cycle shop ... way too good of a deal to just let sit there!

All fit between the front forks.

Based on dimensions, the shorter Duros will lower the effective gear ratio compared to the King/Bridgestone combo - improve acceleration, but worsen fuel economy and top speed. Might run the King rear and Duro 130 front ... hmmm is the Duro 120 too short? Would naturally lower the front though.

#8:   Author: Matthew Post Posted: Sun Jan 10, 2010 6:49 pm

chosing from just those for and by looks

I like the looks of the 120 the best for a rear, flatter, more contact area, that 130 brigs has allot of crown id say good for a front

Got my tire in today got the 120 duro, really dont like the profile of the tire it is little to flat for me for a front. Wanna get rid of one of your 130 tires?

Looking good! The ID reducer bushing is on the way.

I mounted up the Bridgestone 130/90 this past weekend to go with my King 130/90 rear ... still need to find the time to paint the wheels and get back on the bike.

kman is going to be mounting up the Duro 130/90 I had ... hope to see his pics when he gets a chance to get it on his bike.

Hey Dan, heads up something you might want to try, after i ground down the spacer to the right specs i need for centering the rim i relized that it was the same width as one of the bearings i took out of the rear rim,lol dont see why you couldnt use that as a spacer, worth a shot.

That's really sharp. With the new front tire and green paint, it looks military- retro. Almost looks like you need a sidecar!

don't forget your photo album isn't as limited as attachments, you can upload the high quality big ones to your album.

kman.. did you slide the forks up or did yo cut the springs?
and when are you going to ride!!!! need to know how it handles.....dan

#24:   Author: bobodaclownster Post Posted: Tue Jan 26, 2010 2:22 pm

It looks bullet proof. Nice job overall. Reminds me of the Great escape scene when Steve McQueen is riding the motorcycle. (initial impression) OK. Maybe its been a while since I've seen the movie. But that was the first impression.

Its a compliment. LOL

Did you guys have any trouble getting this kit together? I am getting frustrated. I think I finally got it in there, but am now seeing the spacer/axle adjustments that need to be made. How much did you take off the spacer or axle?

#29:   Author: totallyredvirago Post Posted: Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:27 am

kman said the spacer will be about as wide as the bearing..he even recommended using the bearing as a spacer. (front original bearing) as far as the axle. you grind it down so the hole is at the fork.. i am not that far yet.. this is just what i am told and from what i read in the instructions..hope this helps...dan

Kit went togeher fairly easy for me, the spacer was fairly easy also, like i told Dan you might get lucky and be able to use one of the bairings for a spacer but it will be trial and error all bikes are different so what worked for me might not for you, for me though i space the rim center in the forks and the rotor was a tad bit off center from the groove it sets in which is no biggie. for the axle you'll need to take off about an 1/8th" if that.

I tried to cut mine down and i wasent liken the looks of it so i didnt cut it down. What i did instead was use a thinner washer the one that is used with the axle nut and that gave me enuff space to slide the cotter pin back in. Not saying this is the right way but it worked for me,lol

#35:  Re: Rear Rim on the Front Author: dep378 Post Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:08 am

The bearing worked better for me. I just cut it & used the i/s ring. It's still a little too thick. The rotor is rubbing the o/s of the groove. I ground it down a little last night, but didn't mess w/ it long. I'll probably try to spacer for the axle pin as well. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

#36:   Author: Matthew Post Posted: Wed Feb 10, 2010 2:02 pm

Well get that stuff right, Ive had rear tires lock up before at speed, no big deal really, but you don't want a front doing that.

#37:  Re: Rear Rim on the Front Author: dep378 Post Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 9:17 am

Got it all together last night & looks good. The disc is a little to more on the i/s, but it spins freely. The only problem I am having now is the bearing. I tightened the axle nut & spun the wheel & the whole axle turns, tightening the nut even more. I took it apart & the smaller bearing is not spinning freely. Does anyone know where I can buy the smaller bearing(6302)? I just sent Cafe XV750 a pm, but thought I would post a msg too. I bought rear wheel bearings for an early 80's XV on ebay before I bought this kit, but I opened them last night, but the i/s dimensions on those are too big. Any ideas on where I can buy this bearing locally(Knoxville, TN). Thanks

Do a web search theres gotta be something in the area for bearing services, the 6302 is a pretty comon bearing, maybe you can just hoen out the opening a bit to get the bearing to fit better? Mine fit no problem.

#39:   Author: Cafe-XV750 Post Posted: Fri Feb 12, 2010 9:50 pm

Didn't get your PM dep ...

Gotta be careful when installing the bearings - you must push on the outer race and not the inner. Using the inner will deform the bearing and ruin it.

The whole axle definitely shouldn't turn when the nut is tightened - supposed to be pinch-held by the RH fork bolt. A 65mm inner spacer sleeve must be installed between the bearings too (inside the wheel, concentric to the axle) so the bearings aren't crushed when the axle nut is tightened.

A 6302 is a common (standard metric) bearing used in many machinery applications - look into local industrial supply or your local NAPA (a good auto parts supplier should be able to cross ref the 6302 standard designation to a vehicle application/part number).

Just an FYI - the OE rear wheel bearings are 6203 LH (2x) and 6303 RH.

I need this conversion for the 18" rear rim off the secca/maxim. That would really set off my cafe project, a pair of 18s with some thick old school tires!

#41:   Author: Cafe-XV750 Post Posted: Sat Feb 13, 2010 10:40 am

I've thought about the 18" front/rear wheel conversion on my bike too, but more than I want to spend on a essentially free bike project just yet.

I'm fairly sure the rotor adapter hub will bolt on as long as it is the 5-bolt configuration.

The 18" wheel drum is larger in ID/OD and my filler cover will fit (see the XJ pics earlier in this thread), but will look small. If someone gets me the ID/OD of the 18" drum I'll prepare the design and think about having some made if/when I make the next batch.

The outside diameter of the drum looks to be right around 8 3/4".

#47:   Author: Cafe-XV750 Post Posted: Sat Apr 03, 2010 5:17 pm

Have sold all original 10x conversion kits.

If you are interested in buying a kit, let me know via PM and I'll put you 'on the list' for the next batch ... need at least 5x people to consider making another batch.

#48:   Author: Matthew Post Posted: Sun Apr 04, 2010 12:46 am

If I were you, id go ahead on 10 more and start selling them on ebay. As popular as our site is, we only get a small % of the Virago riders eyes.

And mix that in with all the Maxim rider n other bikes it would work on...... they will sell.

Probably get guys with Honda's installing a Yamaha front ends just to use it.

Course someone will copy it, they always do.
But that will happen sooner or later any ways.

How is everyone's project going? It's starting to warm up now & I am ready to finish mine, but the garage is a mess. Anyone have any pics? I have to buy a new front tire. Any recommendations? I would like to go 130, but a skinnier 130. I also need to buy a pinch bolt for the front(axle still turning when I tighten the nut). This is scary b/c it tightens the nut even more until the wheel locks up.

#50:   Author: streetbrawler750 Post Posted: Thu May 27, 2010 7:08 pm

Ok, I am back, I want to update. I had no problem ditching one disc, I am not a racer just have fun, it stops fine with one disc, here are some pics. It rides sweet and handles amazing. Very happy. The forks are not lowered but I did use a 120/80 16 for a different look.
