Blah, I've been so busy and suck with search so I hope you forgive me. I've only one problem thus far (besides still learning how to shift properly).

My gearbox is REALLY LOUD. Mostly on downshifting, and it gets louder the lower I go. Dropping into first is a mightly "clank!". Am I right in thinking it shares the engine oil? I couldn't find anything in the MOM pdf I downloaded about gearbox oil.

Yes, this is my first motorcycle. I hope there is a fix to this. Everyone turns their heads when I drop into first at a stop light. It's a tad annoying...

Thanks to anyone who can help =)

welcome.

And yes your tranny shares the oil with the motor. YOu could try changing the oil and see if it does make a difference. Use what ever brand you fell comfortable with but make sure it is rated for wet clutchs, look for JASO MA/MA2 rating. It should also be rated API GL-1 and make sure it is the right viscosity for your bike. Mostly any brand will work fine, some are better then others, cost doesn't always mean better. Change your oil and filter and see if the noise changes. I prefer full synthetics but everyone has there own opinion.

ok, so it's definitely not normal? My oil level is good and I'm still under 2k miles with at least one oil change having already taken place. I had planned on doing the change this weekend just for the hell of it since it's a new motor, but if the level is good how will changing it help that particular problem?

If they used the wrong oil, yes.

To get you the help you need, I split your question and subsequent posts to a new thread, in the XV250 section. That way the 250 crowd will notice more and tell you what they know.

You wouldn't get many replies if left in the previous thread.

JMO: do a full clutch adjustment. just in case.
a search of the KB (knowledge base) can get you a download-able manual.
manuals can be very handy.

Okay, so I did an oil change today with some 10w-40 as was suggested to me; although it was only semi-synthetic. I also changed out the oil filter per my father's recommendation.

So far, and it's just the first few miles of a fresh oil change, but things feel a bit smoother. But It wasn't a fix all.

I'm starting to think I'm doing something very wrong about how I downshift. Maybe the manual isn't exactly wrong when it says that all downshift points are at 12mph. When I downshift in the last few seconds of coming to a stop, compared to pulling in the clutch and downshifting and then coasting into the stop, it's much smoother and less abrupt. Though, it's not consistent. Some downshifting is nearly mute and unaggressive, and some is "clump CLUMPACLUMP!"

Besides that, I dabbled in some non-1st gear stop light holding today. I'm starting to get really sick and tired of 1st gear on this bike. Half the time I pop up into neutral, especially if I'm on a hill. And even if I don't, then I'm popping immediately into 2nd gear and immediately into 3rd.

A few times I decided to pull up to a stop light at 2nd gear and babied the clutch to make a 2nd gear launch work. Otherwise, I just end up pissing off all the bikers behind me who can take off normal.

Very much considering the sprocket swap.

Do the sprocket swap man, you will be amazed at the difference. I was.

Popped back over to this forum for some info on another issue and figured I'd update this thread as "probably solved".

I'm going to chalk this problem up to inexperience with a manual transmission. I was downshifting way too early. Even though I wasn't disengaging the clutch, it's apparently not the best idea to be downshifting when you're going so fast. Now that I wait to downshift until I'm coming right up to a stop, I can hardly hear the gearbox. I occasionally get a "clump KLUNK!" when I do it a few mph above the comfort zone of the gear box, but besides that I have no more complaints about the "problem".

So, to put it another way, to anyone else who stumbles across this thread because they're wondering why it's so loud, instead of coasting to a stop and spacing your downshifts by a few seconds, meaning that you're starting to downshift when you're still going 20+mph (even if you're slowing down), wait until you're going 10mph or less and then go down, down, down, down in somewhat rapid succession.

Great ! Go to your first post in this topic and edit the title to include SOLVED at the end.

A high idle will also make it clunk when shifting into 1st at a stop.

So I'm taking it as you don't use the clutch when shifting?? If that is what you are doing DON"T.

USE THE CLUTCH!!
