#1:  Can replace OEM Speedo w/ mini speed? (SOLVED) Author: chasowen Post Posted: Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:55 pm

Bobbing my 1987 535. Okay, so I got a good deal on a mini speedo. It has 2 wires (a ground and a backlight) . . . no Reed switch . . . What can I do? Swap out speedometer gear on front wheel with a mechanical . . . can I just switch the cable? Can I squeeze the Reed switch into the Drag Specialties mini speedo?

Wow, I thought I'd have you're answer, but I assumed the 535 was a mechanical speedo.......maybe get the speedo gear off a bigger virago and use that? I would guess the axle is the same size at least.

Unless I totally misunderstand, your virago should have a mechanical speedo, so you should only need to hook up the cable, and the power and ground for the backlight. The reed switch is for the self canceling turn signals. Without the reed switch the the turn signals won't self cancel, and without the magnet in the speedo to activate the reed switch, it is pointless to try to install one.

gotta make sure it's a 2:1 ratio, the other ratios won't work.

My understanding is that the Reed switch on 1987 535 is for speedomoter (not turn signal cancellation). Is magnetic, and not mechanical like other Virago models? Don't know . . . not in literature/manuals. Rolling Eyes

Try this web site http://www.yamaha-motor.com/
It will have the parts catalog for your bike. The speedo drive for the front wheel is part # 1FK-2510-00-00 and the cable is part # 34X-83550-01-00. It is a mechanical speedo.

Okay, so your saying a 1987 535 has a mechanical speedo. So I can just connect the electrics for the backlighting . . . and what about the missing reed switch? No self cancelling turn signals? Can't I just hit the button to turn them off? naughty

The reed switch is closed once for every revolution of the speedometer cable by a magnet in the speedometer which sends a pulse to the self canceling unit. After a certain count of pulses it will de-energize the turn signal relay. Your after market speedo probably doesn't have the magnet anyway if it doesn't have the reed switch. Yes you can push the button to cancel the turn signal.
Two wires for the light. One to ground and one to the head light circuit, doesn't matter which goes where.

I'm confused ( as usual LOL ) if it is indeed mecnanical it should have a place for a speedo cable to connect , shouldn't it ?

If it was electrical it would have just wires ??

My 920 has mechanical driven speedo to an electric lcd display .

Either way 2:1 ratio as club c mentioned is a must

The 535 speedo is mechanical, I have one on my 920R.

I didn't know it was mechanical. I understood that the speedo cable was magnetized in some way that is read by the Reed switch as the cable spins. Read about it in various websites. Still uses a spinning cable, but note the needle ends as opposed to those other cables with blocks on the ends . . . magnetism allows the cable to project it's spin rate through a Reed switch. HOWEVER, most here think the 1987 535 is in fact mechanical, and that the Reed switch effects only the automatic turn signal cancellation. Fine by me, less unnecessary wires and connectors and other crap on this bike. Will try as soon as I receive the load equalizer I'm waiting for (Oberon bar end signals). Let you all know how it goes . . . . with pictures. By the way . . . 2:1 is what I have and is correct for the model. naughty

spin it up with an electric drill from the bottom end of the cable by the wheel .. see what happens ???????????

WELL, my mini speedo is all mounted and hooked up . . . backlight works . . . cable is connected, but too tight to run through it's original clip . . . just waiting to finish this project so I can go out and see if the speedo actually works. Drill is a good idea . . . might try soon if I get impatient. So I'm partially solved, and trusting all of your opinions. Rolling Eyes
