Hi all!!
I just bought a 96 XV1100 (23000 miles). At idle, especially after warmed up, there is a noticeable tick noise. The tick gets faster when the revs go up. The noise seems to come from the top of the cylinder head area on both cylinders, maybe a little louder on the front cylinder. Of course, the front cylinder is out in the open so that may explain the difference. The bike runs great, doesn't "miss" or backfire. My question is, is this tick noise normal for this engine?? It is not extremely loud, just noticeable enough for me to question it. Thanks for any and all replies. Sincerely, Dave.

Viragos do make a little noise . . listen to some sound clips off Utube or find someone else w/ one to compare to.

Rhythmic ticking (kind of like a wind-up clock) is normal. Rattling, knocking, banging, and and loud tapping are abnormal

Check the valve clearance
Valve clearance refers to the small gap between a rocker arm and a valve stem that ensures that the valve completely closes. On engines with mechanical valve adjustment excessive clearance will cause noise from the valve train. Yamaha recommends check and adj if needed every 5000 mi.

@ dghawk

You need to put the year and model of your bike in your signature for future posts.

Sounds like it's pretty normal then... It is a rhythmic ticking like a clock. I will post a pic as soon as I can. Thank you all for your answers!! I appreciate it. Sincerely, Dave.

my 920 did it for a couple of years , I always meant to have it looked at but like you and others have said it does not seem to bother performance at all ....
